How to survive a home invasion

You should have a plan just in case an intruder enters your home. Although they are relatively rare, home invasions are terrifying. Make sure you know all the “extras” your home security system provides to protect you from home invasion.

One built-in feature of many basic home security systems is a secret code that alerts your monitoring service that an intruder is in your home. By pressing a unique set of four numbers into your control panel, the monitoring service will respond by calling the police and telling them an intruder is in your home. Remember this code and give it out to no one. This works really well if an intruder follows you into the house. Simply tell the intruder you have to deactivate the alarm and punch in the secret code.

Another way a home security system can help if an intruder enters your home while you’re there is to create a safe room in your house that includes a panic button. Most homeowners install this button in the master bedroom or bathroom – any room that has a locked door. The panic button works just like the secret code on your control panel, except most models just require you to push the button.

Whatever you do, keep calm. Get away into a locked room if it all possible.
